VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Several homes and businesses are without power across the Wabash Valley as a severe thunderstorm blew through the area on Thursday afternoon.
Energy companies in the area are working to restore power to residents, businesses, and streetlights throughout the area. According to a post from Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, the phone lines in the business office and jail are out due to damage from the storm, but it is unknown when the phone lines will be restored. The 911 dispatch lines are still up and running in case of an emergency.
According to the Duke Energy Indiana Power Outage Map, as of 4:00 p.m., there were 907 active outages and 49,562 customers without power.
Update: As of 5 p.m., Duke Energy’s outage map was reporting 36,000 customers in the Terre Haute area without power. Across the state, as of 5 p.m. Duke Energy was reporting a total of 142,748 customers without power. At 3:30 p.m. Ameren Energy’s Power Outage Map reported 174,715 customers without service.
10:30 p.m. Update: As of 10:30 p.m. Ameren in Illinois was reporting 140,901 customers without power across the state. WIN Energy REMC’s outage map reports a total of 197 outages, affecting 6,913 customers through their coverage area. Duke Energy’s outage map shows 2,594 active outages, affecting 117,867 customers across the state. Locally, the Terre Haute area showed 37,000 customers without power, with another 8,000 in the Center Point area, and 3,000 in Sullivan.
WIN Energy’s Power Outage Map showed 1,765 customers without power as of 3:00 p.m. WIN Energy also released a statement regarding the extensive damage that resulted in many without power. WIN Energy customers may not have power for an extended period of time and encourages those without power to make the necessary preparations. The full statement is below:
Vincennes, IN (6/29/2023) –Around 3 p.m. ET storms hit our service territory resulting in over 7,300 power outages. Our crews will work to access the damage and restore power to our members as quickly and safely as possible. Due to the widespread damage, some members may be without power for an extended period of time and should make necessary arrangements.
If you see damage to buildings, fallen trees and power lines, put safety first and stay away from unsafe structures and any fallen power lines.
