TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— As setup for the Special Olympics summer games in Terre Haute continues, their partnership with the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility comes in handy for the Bocce event.
The WVCF has full responsibility for building, maintaining, and setting up the Bocce courts for this weekend’s event. This gives some of the inmates a chance to get outside and enjoy the nice summer weather along with helping out a good cause.
“It gives us a little bit of sense of normalcy instead of just sitting around. It’s just nice to be able help out the little bit that we can,” said Nicholas Bushell, an inmate at the WVCF.
This event will be a very big attraction for people to enjoy this weekend. It is one of the largest events that Terre Haute hosts all summer.
“This weekend is summer games. It’s our largest sporting event of the year. We will have over 2,100 different athletes competing this weekend in seven different sports for gold medals,” said Jeff Mohler, President and CEO of Special Olympics Indiana.
