CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Several residents have been displaced following a Tuesday morning house fire in Clay County.
According to Cory Fire Department Chief Glen Neiswinger, the call came in of a residential structure fire along N. County Road 200 W. at approximately 9:30 a.m.
When firefighters arrived they reported heavy smoke coming from the front of the home. Chief Neiswinger said it took crews more than an hour to knock the fire down. As of 1 p.m. firefighters remained on scene putting out hot spots. The house is considered a loss, as well as two vehicles that were in the garage at the time.
A resident reportedly told firefighters they heard the basement smoke detector sounding, noticed smoke coming from the basement, and called 911 before getting out of the building. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, but Chief Neiswinger confirmed the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office would be investigating.
The chief thanked members of Centerpoint Fire, Posey Township Fire, Clay City Fire, Van Buren Fire, and Prairieton Fire for assistance in responding to the scene.
Neiswinger said the displaced residents would be staying with relatives and declined to have Red Cross contacted for assistance.
