VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– Thousands of people are making the trip to Vincennes this weekend to take part in a tradition that celebrates American History.
The Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous features hundreds of historical enthusiasts, plenty of food and a live demonstration of what combat would’ve looked like during the Revolutionary War. Joe Herron, the Chief Ranger at George Rogers Clark National Historical Park– where part of the event is held– said it was a major event for the community each year.
“Vincennes is a community that’s always embraced its history, and this is all stops. Several people in the community come together, people take a lot of pride in our French culture, we cover a period all the way from the French-Indian War all the way up to the War of 1812,” he said. “There is a lot of history in this region at that time, and this gives people a chance to stay in tune with it.”
The event has been held for nearly 50 years, and Herron said they had over 300 people participating as historical reenactors. He said the event has grown over the years due to its consistency.
“We’ve had the event every year except one the last 47 years. People know what to expect, they know it’s a quality event, they know there are reenactors and living history participants coming in that bring a wealth of knowledge,” he said.
The event will run through Sunday.
