VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — In preparation for the fishing season, the Department of Natural Resources will be restocking several bodies of water across the state for fishing season.
DNR will be stocking 33 bodies of water across 21 counties with nearly 50,000 trout in preparation for the spring trout fishing season which starts on Saturday, April 29.
The stocking of rainbow trout in state lakes started the week of March 20. Anglers don’t have to have to wait for the opening day of stream trout fishing season to fish because trout fishing on lakes is open all year.
For stream fishing, DNR will be stocking 18,000 rainbow trout in the weeks leading up to opening day, which is first-day anglers can legally catch trout from streams. Along with the stocking of rainbow trout, several bodies of water in the northern part of the state will receive brown trout.
The bag limit for trout is 5 per day with a minimum size of 7 inches for inland waters other than Lake Michigan and its tributaries. No more than one of the angler’s catches can be a brown trout. Any caught or harvested brown trout caught below the Brookville tailwater or from Oliver, Olin, or Martin lakes must be 18 inches or larger.
To fish for trout, anglers age 18 and older must have an Indiana fishing license and a trout/salmon stamp.
