TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– As millions of people get ready to travel for the holidays, law enforcement officers are issuing reminders to be on the lookout for bad weather this week.
Temperatures will decrease as we get closer to Christmas, and there is a threat for snow later in the week as well. Sgt. Matt Ames with the Indiana State Police said drivers should keep an eye on the forecast, and travel with emergency kits.
“Some of the easiest things you can carry in that emergency kit is just a blanket, an extra jacket, some gloves, some earmuffs,” he said. “You may want to make sure that you have a cell phone charger.”
Ames said holiday travel brings extra traffic to I-70. and ISP will have extra patrols to help combat the increase.
“ISP will definitely see an influx of traffic coming up on I-70. We’re probably going to see it between Thursday and Friday, and then of course on Monday as people are returning to go home,” he said. “So we ask for people to make sure you’re being patient while driving on Interstate 70.”
The travel also comes as gas prices– which hit historic highs around the Wabash Valley earlier this year– have begin to settle under $3 a gallon. Ken Booth, a resident in Knox County, has welcomed the drop in prices.
“It’s been going down, and luckily just in time for Christmas, with a lot of Christmas traveling going on, which really makes it beneficial to help everybody out to go out and see family,” he said. “The fact that it’s under three dollars a gallon is phenomenal.”
Ames said the extra patrols will run through the end of 2022.
