CARLISLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Local children learned about Inuit culture on Thursday with a musical performance by the band Pamyua.
Pamyua blends traditional Inuit music with contemporary genres.
The band is visiting Sullivan County this week through a program by Arts Midwest. They performed for students in Carlisle on Thursday.
Band members say they’re happy to share their music, language and culture with people in Sullivan County.
“We use music as a method to a means we’re trying to achieve, in bringing unity, in bringing understanding and cultural awareness, not just around the United States and around Alaska, but around the world,” says Qacung, a co-founder of the group.
“Being engaged with the young ones who were here today is a prime example. They are the future. They are our future in this country and if they have more appreciation and more understanding, the better not just for us but for them as well,” says band member Aassanaaq.
Pamyua will hold a community concert at Sullivan High School on Friday at 7 p.m.
