TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Two people were taken to the hospital and Wabash Avenue was closed for a time Wednesday morning after a crash involving five vehicles.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:46 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Wabash Ave and Country Club Rd. According to the Terre Haute Police Department, a driver following too closely was to blame.
Police said that a Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by a 32-year-old Clinton man, had been driving eastbound in the left lane and was approaching slowed traffic at the intersection when he tried to change lanes. The Clinton man told police that a vehicle in his blind spot prevented the lane change and so they struck a Dodge pickup truck, driven by a 31-year-old Terre Haute man. The Dodge had been stopped waiting for a vehicle in front of it to turn left onto Country Club Rd.
The force from the collision pushed the Dodge pickup into a Honda mini-van, driven by a man whose age and origin were redacted in the crash report, who had been waiting to turn.
A Hyundai car, driven by a 21-year-old Terre Haute woman, had been driving westbound on Wabash Ave at the same time. The force from the crash pushed the two pickup trucks into the westbound lane where they crashed into the front of the Hyundai.
A Chrysler mini-van, driven by a 59-year-old Brazil woman, had been following the Hyundai car westbound and was sideswiped by one of the vehicles involved in the crash as well.
Two drivers were transported to area hospitals with one complaining of head pain and unable to recall what had happened.
The cleanup from the crash shut down Wabash for more than an hour, but by 8:30 a.m. the road had been re-opened.
