TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local organization has taken a different approach to waste reduction in the Wabash Valley.
This summer Rethink Inc. and a local intern from Indiana University are working together to reduce the amount of Styrofoam and single-use plastics that are used by Terre Haute restaurants.
Their goal is to eliminate the use of plastic utensils, straws, and Styrofoam to-go containers. They want to achieve that by using alternatives like wooden utensils and reusable straws.
Indiana University intern Mariah Bader said she has already spoken with 12 restaurants and is excited to make a change.
“Rethink is a very powerful organization in Terre Haute, I would say,” Bader said. “Being able to now meet with them and then maybe have the possibility to becoming a green business would be something that’s amazing. Not only does switching to compostable and reusable containers or cutlery help the planet, but it can help cut cost.”
