Greene County, Ind (WTWO/WAWV) – In rural Greene County, you’ll find a bridge that’s said to be one of the longest of its type in the world.
The “Tulip Trestle” or “Viaduct” was built in 1906 north of Broomfield. Trains still cross it today. The steel structure is 157 feet high and roughly 2300 feet long. Lots of people come to look at it.
“It’s amazing the amount of visitors. We had a sign in sheet down here that we utilized for a long time and we were getting close to 1,600 a month,” said Mike Lindsey with the ‘Tulip Trestle Restoration Committee.’
The restoration committee built and now maintains an observation area. People can watch for a train or enjoy the serenity or nature.
“It’s just a great place to sit and gather your thoughts,” said Kerry Winter Haver.
“It’s a place to get away, quiet, peaceful,” added Mike Lindsey.
You can also take a book from the little library or read about the trestle’s history. There’s even a buried time capsule. It’s scheduled to be opened in 30 years.
On the first Saturday of December, the group holds a special Christmas event on the observation deck. It includes ham and beans, cookies and special treats for kids. The restoration committee says between 350 and 400 people attend. The ‘Tulip Trestle Restoration Committee’ accepts donations to help with its efforts.
