TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An exhibit paying tribute to the Mengele twins of the Holocaust is on display at the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center.
The museum recently re-installed eight plexiglass panels that list the twins of Auschwitz. The museum says it was a goal of its founder, Holocaust survivor Eva Kor, to find as many twins as possible.
She and her twin sister Miriam were both survivors of the medical experiments done at Auschwitz.
“This is a way for us to kind of pay tribute to those twins,” CANDLES Executive Director Troy Fears said. “To let people know that we’re still thinking about them and that they were real people. It’s amazing to see the number of twins, the number of individuals on the list. It’s not a comprehensive list, but it was a list, again, made by Eva Kor and others here at CANDLES.”
While not a complete list, Fears says the display serves an important purpose.
“It really just kind of puts it all in perspective as far as letting people know that they were individuals, they were humans with names. They had a life prior to the atrocities of the Holocaust,” said Fears. “CANDLES is the only Holocaust Museum in the world that focuses on twins.”
The CANDLES museum is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
