TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A man has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a crash that left his car upside down in Terre Haute Wednesday.
According to Terre Haute Police, units were called to the scene at the intersection of Maple Avenue and N 9th Street at 11:54 a.m. finding a car on its roof with the driver having escaped the vehicle through a window.
That vehicle was a Dodge Stratus, driven by Daniel Dowell, 36, of Terre Haute. Officers report that after speaking to Dowell about the events that led to the crash that “It was apparent that Daniel had been operating while intoxicated.” Field sobriety tests also indicated intoxication, said police.
According to the crash report, the Dodge Stratus was traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue, when it struck a Toyota Van that had been stopped at a stop sign. The impact to the left rear end of the van, caused the Stratus to tip over onto its roof. Dowell told officers he had been driving when he looked to his left towards something in the park that got his attention and he failed to see the stopped car in front of him.
Dowell was reportedly also found to be in possession of cannabis, he was placed under arrest and taken to Union Hospital for a blood draw test.
Dowell was charged with Class-A misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, and the Class-A misdemeanor of operating a vehicle while intoxicated-endangerment.
No injuries were reported, both drivers had been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
