TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WAWV/WTWO) – The Terre Haute Humane Society saw significant damage from April 13th storms.
The shelter got a call at 8 p.m. the night of the storms about a tree that had fallen on the building.
Shelter staff rushed to check on the animals soon after the call and said no animals were injured.
The morning following, the shelter reached out to the Wabash Valley Tree Service about removal of the tree.
Wabash Valley Tree Service Owner Joe Sanquenetti said his crew removed the limbs piece by piece.
“We started out with the bucket truck and then we used the crane to remove the bigger limbs,” Sanquenetti said.
Sanquenetti said the damage is unknown until more of the tree is removed.
“We will be able to measure the damage towards the end of the day as more limbs are removed,” Sanquenetti said.
The Terre Haute Humane Society does have insurance to cover the damage and will remain open to the public.
However, Terre Haute Humane Society Executive Director Charles Brown said operations may look a bit different due to the damage.
“It’s displaced about 20 to 27 dogs within our building,” Brown said. “We’ve set up some temporary shelter for them and will adjust to the situation.”
President of the Board of Directors for the Terre Haute Humane Society Ray Buechler said the shelter has planed to seek temporary fosters for the animals that have been displaced.
“Fostering is our plan as of right now,” said Buechler. of temporary fosters for the animals that have been displaced.”
The shelter has already received a great deal of support in such a short time.
“Several thousand dollars worth of donations have already been made and we’re grateful for the support,” Buechler said.
Buechler said announcements will be made on their Facebook page on assessed damage and future community efforts.
