TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One woman was flown to a hospital by helicopter Wednesday night following a crash involving a semi truck and passenger car on Interstate 70.
Saad Yasir-Abood Al-Janaby, 58, Dearborn, Mich., was parked in I-70’s emergency lane with his emergency lights on when the incident occurred around 7 p.m., police said. His 2013 Volvo semi was allegedly having mechanical issues, causing Al-Janaby to pull over.
Another driver, 55-year-old Karen Jarman of Gas City, Ind., was driving a 1999 Toyota passenger car west on I-70 near the ten-mile marker when she failed to see Al-Janaby’s semi and emergency lights, Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames said.
The passenger side of Jarman’s car then hit Al-Janaby’s semi’s rear bumper, causing her car to continue forward for another 300 feet uncontrollably before hitting a guard rail. Her Toyota then rolled onto its top and eventually came to a stop, Ames said.
The Terre Haute Fire Department was called to the scene to help get Jarman out of her car. She was then flown to Method Hospital in Indianapolis with non-life-threatening injuries, Ames said.
There is currently no update on Jarman’s injuries or status, Ames said. Al-Janaby was not injured during the accident.
Distracted driving, drugs and alcohol are not considered to be contributing factors, police said.
“The Indiana State Police wants to reiterate, make sure you’re not driving while distracted and you’re 100% focused on driving,” Ames said. “Make sure you’re obeying the posted speed limit and that you’re always buckled up.”
All lanes of Interstate 70 traveling westbound are now cleared and open.
