TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State University laid out plans for a potential tuition increase during a virtual press conference Wednesday. The proposed tuition hike would be for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years.
For full-time in-state undergraduate students, tuition for next year would increase by $66 a semester and $67 a semester for the following year. ISU Treasurer Diann McKee said Wednesday that the university is committed to limiting tuition increases to be no higher than the Consumer Price Index for the Midwest.
McKee also said that the university has a history of being affordable for students and that with the proposed tuition increases ISU will still be the most affordable major university in the state. For the 2021-22 school year, Indiana University-Bloomington’s tuition will be $11,333 and Ball State’s $10,291 compared to ISU’s proposed $9,598, according to a presentation from ISU officials.
The university, according to McKee, will use the tuition money to provide student scholarships and continue to improve its academics. Additionally, money will be used to fund construction and maintain operational costs.
After discussing the tuition increase proposal Wednesday, ISU Chief of Staff Teresa Exline asked if any attendees would like to make a public comment for the school board’s consideration, but no one responded. The ISU Board of Trustees will discuss the tuition increase and consider public comments at its next meeting.
