VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps reported Tuesday that due to the COVID-19 situation at the Vermillion County Jail, it will be closed to visitors on Sunday and Tuesday. The coronavirus pandemic had previously forced the jail to scale back visits to the first Sunday of the month for male inmates and the first Tuesday of the month for women.
The jail had just completed a 14-day quarantine period when new tests today revealed two more positives, necessitating another 14-day quarantine. About half of the inmate population, between 23 and 25 inmates, have tested positive in the past.
“What’s weird is that very few of them have been symptomatic,” Phelps noted.
Phelps added that when the current quarantine is complete, the situation will be reassessed. “We’ll reevaluate after this 14-day period,” he said, adding that visits could be scheduled for later in January.
