TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– According to Indiana State Police, holiday accidents decreased this year and so far, there have been no fatalities in the Putnamville district.
However, Sgt. Matt Ames, Public Information Officer for Indiana State Police, said speeding and texting and driving continues to be an issue.
Authorities said they expect to see an increase in DUI’s and motor-vehicle accidents due to intoxication as the New Year rolls around.
Ames said drivers should use their best judgement.
“People need to prepare themselves when they are getting ready to go out and have a good time, ” he said. “Here in the United States there’s over 30 people killed daily due to DUI’s. That is ridiculous. We need to better planning.”
Ames recommends selecting a designated driver or requesting a ride share service like Uber.
Indiana State Police plan to continue increased patrols on the roadways through Jan. 2.
