VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — After closing in March and reopening under stage 4 in June, the Vigo County Historical Museum has had its share of adjustments.
“Our average visitors were about 35 a day before we had the shutdown. So we’re averaging 14 a day right now,” said Executive Director Susan Tingley.
Due to a decline in visitors, the museum will be closed on Sundays.
“We have volunteers, people working here on Sunday and when you only have a handful of visitors come in, it’s not as fun. Plus, we do pay extra to be open on Sundays.
According to the health department, Vigo County has seen around 20 new COVID-19 cases within the last week. They want people to remain cautious.
“It’s still here. If we do have huge amounts in our county, we could go back in phases and no one wants that,” said Roni Elder, health educator.
While the state remains in limbo in stage 4 point five of reopening, Tingley said looking back at history, like the flu pandemic in the early 1900s, may help make some progress
“Wearing the masks and social distancing and not going out where crowds are, that’s going to be what it takes. That’s what it took in 1918-1919. That’s what it’s going to take today,” she said.
The historical museum will be closed on Sundays through the summer months.
