TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Those with the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board said Wednesday that things are moving forward with construction on the new convention center coming to Downtown Terre Haute.
“There was a very good update on the progress of construction, which is utilities and infrastructure at this point,” said Brian Bosma of Kroger, Gardis and Regas law firm.
Part of that construction will bring the Larry Bird museum to life, which will be inside the convention center. Accoding to Bosma, Bird approved for his memorabilia to be put on display.
In addition to featuring the Indiana State University alum and NBA legend, it will also pay homage to Hoosier sports.
“There will be other sports displays sharing some of both Indiana’s and Terre Haute’s long history of sports support.
A firm out of Ohio will work on the designs of the museum, which is in the very early stages.
“We want to have them help us craft what this looks like. Working with Larry Bird and his attorneys and everybody else to make something that we can all appreciate,” said Mayor Duke Bennett.
According to the CIB, it could ultimately become yet another attraction drawing visitors to Terre Haute.
“It’ll be a pretty big deal for the local community and really for the state to have this icon honored,” said Bosma.
The convention center is scheduled to open in 2022.
