VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman said 2020 will be a big election year.
He said one particular
race in Vigo County
has a lot at stake.
“We have to be very, very smart with who we’re electing as Commissioners right now. I think we’re growing and I think it’s some good things going on. I think people are vested in that race,” he said.
Commissioners Judy Anderson and Brad Anderson have both chosen to retire after serving many years, leaving their roles up for grabs.
“After this year I’m going to rest for a while,” Brad Anderson said.
Judy Anderson added, “I’m going to rest for a long while.”
They said being a Commissioner brings great responsibility.
“We are in charge, basically, of all the contracts that are signed throughout the county for everything. All of the buildings that belong to Vigo County, we’re basically the ones responsible. Our names are on the line for all those things. There’s a lot of people that just don’t realize how in-depth this job is,” Judy Anderson said.
Those who are elected will have major projects to continue oversee.
“That’ll be the
convention center
,
the jail
,
the casino
will be started. And hopefully the
VA hospital
will also be started,” said Brad Anderson.
Those chosen will also have new orders of business to keep the county growing.
“Of course jobs will be the next thing. Once that’s constructed, hopefully the Commissioners can be involved in the growth in that and they’ll be hundreds of jobs available. And good jobs. So, that’s why it’ll be a great thing to undertake,” said Brad Anderson.
Judy Anderson said she is hopeful for Vigo County’s future after her departure.
“I feel pretty good about the fact that what I’m leaving to the next one to come up. They should be able to grab on and run, and get things finished,” she said.
In their last year as Commissioners, they said one of their biggest goals is to keep the county projects on budget.
After their retirement, both Judy Anderson and Brad Anderson plan to be involved with non-profit organizations.
