On Monday’s Marshall City Council agenda was the question whether or not the city should allow dispensaries following marijuana legalization.
It’s a measure that some citizens say they support.
“The main thing about allowing a dispensary here is the revenue that it could generate for our community,” said Jeff Wallace, Marshall resident.
The council decided to not vote on the ordinance Monday, a decision that came to the surprise of some city officials.
“I actually thought it was going to pass and just go into a ban, but this was news to me,” said Mayor John Trefz, City of Marshall.
Instead some council members asked for the vote to be delayed and possibly put on a future ballot.
It’s a decision that Trefz and some community members say they believe is the right one.
“I have no problem putting it on the ballot, let the people make the decision,” Trefz said.
“That puts it in the hands of the voters themselves, rather than basing this on partisan lines or maybe their own personal feelings,” Wallace said.
Some members of the council say they believe it’s time for city officials to make a stance on marijuana and how it will impact Marshall.
“I wanted to see a vote. Win or lose, be a man, put on your big boy pants and vote,” said Warren Lafever, Marshall City Council Ward 3.
Trefz says he and the city attorney will begin reviewing on Tuesday whether or not a vote on the matter is possible.
If the measure is taken to a vote, the next Marshall city election is in April of 2021.
