LYONS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — It’s only been a few days since the announcement was made that the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza will be heading to Lyons, IN, in 2020, but planning is already well underway as organizers figure out how to accommodate thousands of people in a rural community.
John Cline, owner of Pleasant Grove Inn in Lyons, says he’s used to visitors from out of town.
“A lot of people like to get out of town and go out in the country and just relax and this is it, this is the place,” said Cline.
Cline says he’s already received several reservations for the weekend of the Scheid Diesel event next August.
“We have one room and four suites left to rent that weekend,” said Cline.
Pleasant Grove Inn, located on Pleasant Grove Farms, is one of the closest facilities where people can stay in relation to Wagler Motorsports Park, where the event will be held.
Jeremy Wagler, who owns the park, is already putting into place a plan to keep attendees safe and close to the park.
“We’re talking to farmers locally about adding some more campsites so people can stay here on sire as much as possible. There’s not a whole lot of restaurants in the area so we will have a lot of food vendors on staff here trying to accommodate everything that we can right here on the facility instead of making you drive to town,” and Wagler.
Local law enforcement is already stressing the importance of sober driving during the event, for which he also has a plan.
“Looking at doing the tour bus, renting tour busses to run people back and forth and shuttle to hotels like in Washington and in Bloomington,” said Wagler.
Wagler says Daviess County law enforcement, along with Indiana State Police, Greene County law enforcement, and the Lyons Town Marshal will all contribute to security during the event.
Dan Scheid, who’s from Daviess County just south of Lyons, says this is a special opportunity for his business.
“It;s kinda nice to get back down in our hometown territory there and to be able to bring the show back down here,” said Scheid.
Wagler adds that the park is just as excited to bring the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza to its tracks.
“I believe that the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza will be the best show, the biggest show that we’ll ever have, so, should be exciting,” said Wagler.
Wagler says he’s close to finalizing a purchase of land across from the park where there is currently a turkey farm. He says this will be converted into campsites for events.
