The event honors female military members both past and present. Combat boots were decorated, and will soon be on display at local businesses such as Grand Traverse Pie Company and Baesler’s.
The boots are meant to help share the stories of those women from the Wabash Valley who have served. Those decorating the boots say they were excited to turn a staple of their uniform into a work of art.
Numbers were down for “In Her Boots” this year, but organizer Gwen Hicks wasn’t discouraged, as she sees the initiative as a great way to honor the women who have served their country, no matter how many.
“I think the military is as well-oiled a machine as it is because women are stepping up and serving and fulfilling those jobs and doing them really, really well. Those role models are critical for other young women to see that there’s no job you can’t do if they want to do it,” said Hicks.
