SHOALS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A man who removed his ankle monitor and fled his home in Shoals, Indiana is back in custody.
James “Mike” Hert was arrested Wednesday after six days on the run.
The manhunt began Friday morning after Martin County Community Corrections notified the sheriff’s office that Hert had tampered with his home monitoring device. When deputies arrived at the Shoals residence, Hert was nowhere to be found.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office received multiple tips from concerned citizens regarding Hert’s possible whereabout.
The final tip came Wednesday advising of a possible location for Hert in the county. Sheriff Travis Roush, Chief Deputy Josh Greene and Deputy John Wright tracked footprints they believe belonged to Hert before catching up to him hours later.
Hert was arrested on a felony charge of escape. He was also found to be in possession of a substance suspected to be methamphetamine which could lead to additional charges.
Hert is being held at the Martin County Security Center without bond.
