VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana Senate Bill 2, which passed this spring, requires school corporations to check their school bus routes and safety policies by September 1 to improve the safety of students.
According to Vigo County, they are already ahead.
“Bus drivers are allowed to pick up their buses and practice those routes, check on their stops and see if there’s any issues with the roadways,” said Vigo County bus driver, Shane Mullinex.
The passing of Indiana Senate Bill 2 has helped school officials to find solutions for possible dangers.
“We always make sure we’re picking up on the door side. We’re not going to have children cross lanes of traffic because we know stop arm violations are a real issue,” said Bill Riley of Vigo County School Corporation.
This year, they are working to fight that problem with new technology on school buses.
“We’ve added stop arm cameras that will catch people coming and going they’re high definition,” said Riley.
The school corporation sends out a team multiple times a year to analyze routes.
“We have a coordinator of routes that does all that analysis and uses past data but also uses the computer to analyze the route and make sure that we’re not just in compliance but we’re doing the safest possible thing for our students,” said Riley.
According to Indiana Senate Bill 2, anyone who commits a “bus stop arm violation” may have their driving privileges suspended or they could be charged.
