VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Four people were transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries following a multi-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on I-74.
According to a release from the Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps, Deputies were notified of the accident while at the scene of a vehicle fire half a mile west near MM 1 on I-74.
Upon investigation, Deputies discovered that a semi driven by Daniel Alvarez, 53, of Peoria, failed to slow down for slowed traffic and collided with several cars, causing a chain reaction.
Alvarez struck a passenger car driven by Kaleb Acuna, 18, of State Line, IN. Acuna, a juvenile passenger and an infant passenger were all transported to Carle Hospital with life threatening injuries.
Alvarez also struck a pick-up truck driven by Jeremy Ramage, 44, of Union, KY.
Alvarez then struck a third vehicle, an SUV driven by Patricia Campbell, 60, of Indianapolis. Campbell was also taken to Carle Hospital with life threatening injuries.
Finally, Alvarez struck another semi driven by Kathy McCarthy, 59, of Edgewater, FL.
The initial cause of the crash is still under investigation.
