WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One firefighter was hospitalized for heat exposure after helping fight a garage fire in West Terre Haute.
According to a spokesperson from the Sugar Creek Fire Department, the injured firefighter is in stable condition.
The call came in at 4:23 p.m. Friday of a garage fire on Darwin Road. When firefighters arrived on scene, the garage was engulfed in flames.
A lack of water supply made it hard to fight the fire, according to the Sugar Creek Fire Department battalion chief. Multiple fire departments were called in to assist.
The excessive heat has also been a challenge for firefighters. The Vigo County Emergency Management Agency was on hand to pass out water.
Racing cars and fuel were being stored in the garage.
Firefighters expect the garage to be destroyed.
The battalion chief asked drivers to avoid the area while firefighters work to contain the blaze. He said to use Switzer Drive to Robinson Place as a detour.
