Residents of an apartment complex had a close call after leaving their kitchen stove on.
The Terre Haute Fire Department was called to Greenwood Manor Apartments around 6:30 pm for a structure fire on 23rd 1/2 drive.
According to the landlord the building was relatively empty at the time. Neighboring residents were evacuated as a precaution and four engines responded to the fire.
Fire officials say it was an accidental kitchen fire and that the fire could have been a lot worse.
“With the investigation showing it started around the stove it’s a good reminder to make sure that the stove is off and like these people had here, they had a compression system above the stove which put the fire out quickly,” Terre Haute Fire Department Deputy Marshall Brenton Lloyd said.
Residents of the surrounding building were allowed to return to their apartments. But the residents where the fire originated have to vacate for the night while the apartment is repaired.
