SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) The Sullivan County jail is 35 years old and faces overcrowding. Now, county leaders are taking a proactive approach to solving the issue.
Monday, night Sullivan County Commissioners heard a presentation from Ellvatus Architecture out of Fort Wayne.
The company says they would base designs and construction around what the county needs.
This was the third presentation from a firm looking to help Sullivan County Jail with its overcrowding problem.
One of the company’s recent projects was a jail in Adams County that housed 212 beds and cost approximately $16 million.
“At this point and time, we are still gathering information, trying to figure out what we want to do next,” Sullivan County Commissioner Robert Davis said. “There’s a lot of steps to this process and we are learning more and more as we go. So, I mean at this point in time we are really just trying to gather information.”
County officials say they are moving slowly and weighing their options.
Next, the county plans to hold public information meetings.
They also plan to tour newly built jails and meet with architects and designers to see what’s best for the community.
